The Algarve’s beaches are world-best

What do Marinha, Falésia, Meia Praia, Odeceixe and Manta Rota have in common? They’re just some of the many beaches that have brought the Algarve the title of World’s Best Beach Destination.

Among the 12 awards garnered by Portugal at the 28th edition of the World Travel Awards 2021, the Algarve walked away with the award for the World’s Best Beach Destination for the second year in a row.

Voted for by the main leaders of the global tourism and travel industry, the awards recognise the very best in tourism around the world. After receiving the distinction at the European awards in October, read more here, the Algarve has repeated the feat by being named the World’s Best Beach Destination.

The region beat off another 19 nominees, including world-renowned beach resort destinations such as Cancún, Jamaica, Maldives, Thailand and Zanzibar. The award, says the president of the Algarve Tourism Association, João Fernandes, confirms the region as a destination whose role and relevance at a global level are unquestionable.

“At a critical time like this, when the recovery of the tourism sector is being prepared, it’s [a source of] immense pride and also an added responsibility. A distinction that is due not only to [the region’s] undeniable natural qualities, but also to the result of the work of women and men who contribute daily to the quality of tourism in the Algarve,” explains the president.

Noting that the pandemic has brought safety, security and confidence to the top of the list of requirements for travellers, João Fernandes adds: “As a prestigious seal recognised worldwide, this award reinforces the added value of the Algarve, as a destination capable of guaranteeing a response that meets the standards of demand defined by today’s tourists.”
