Two cultural events will be celebrating tradition and entertainment over the next weekend. The Saint Andrew’s Society invites you to its annual Burns Supper on January 25, offering an evening of Scottish fare, music, and dance. Meanwhile, Quinta das Borboletas in Almancil presents “Royal Tea,” a witty and engaging play performed alongside a traditional English tea.
Burn Supper
The Saint Andrew’s Society of the Algarve is hosting this year’s Burns Supper at Ponte Romana in Silves on Saturday, January 25.
Starting at 7pm, guests will be welcomed by the stirring sounds of piper Malcolm MacGillivray.
Following a hearty soup, MacSween’s haggis, duly addressed, will be served alongside tatties and neeps as the main course. For those preferring an alternative, pre-ordered fish will also be available. Complementing the meal will be a selection of wines and perhaps even amber mead, alongside Atholl Brose and coffee.
The highlight of the evening will include the customary Immortal Memory speech, honouring the life and works of Robert Burns, followed by jovial toasts to the Lassies and Laddies.
The festivities will culminate in Scottish country dancing and conclude with the traditional singing of Auld Lang Syne.
Tickets, €35 for members and €40 for non-members, can be reserved at +351 919 635 246.
Royal Tea
Royal Tea is being performed on two more consecutive Saturdays at Quinta das Borboletas in Areeiro, Almancil.
Guests can enjoy a traditional English tea while watching a delightful comic performance by the Random Players, written in rhyme by Carolyn Kain.
The play is set in Selfridges (London department store) tearoom and tells of King Manuel II’s swift exile from Portugal to England and his scandalous affair with a French actress, Gaby Deslys.
Harry Selfridge welcomes prominent guests, including Anna Pavlova and Isadora Duncan, sparking drama and flirtation.
When Selfridge makes advances Gaby, tensions rise. The plot thickens with disputes over the famous Cambridge Emeralds, adding intrigue to this fact-based story.
Romantic entanglements, Harry’s support of the suffragettes together with lively singing and dancing, all peppered with double entendres, make this a must-see production.
Performances start at 3pm on Saturdays January 25 and February 1. Tickets cost €15, including a traditional English tea and a glass of sparkling wine. Profits will be given to Algarve Families in Need.
