Both the St Martin’s Fair in Portimão and the Sweet Potato Festival in Aljezur, will highlight local traditions and offer a fun, communal experience for all ages.
Saint Martin’s Fair
This year celebrates the 361st Feira de São Martinho, dating back to 1662, taking place in Portimão from November 08 to 17.
Hosted at the Parque de Feiras e Exposições, the fair will be open from 4pm to 10pm each day, with free admission.
Visitors can look forward to a lively fairground experience, complete with traditional treats like roasted chestnuts, popcorn, chorizo bread and even roasted octopus.
This cherished local tradition promises fun for all ages in a celebration that brings together the community for food, festivities and the spirit of São Martinho.
Sweet Potato Festival
Aljezur’s Sweet Potato Festival will take place from November 29 to December 1, celebrating the unique Lyra sweet potato variety.
The festival will bring together sweet potato growers, chefs, bakers, restaurants, artisans and musicians for a lively celebration of this regional staple.
The Lyra sweet potato, known for its distinct flavour and texture, has become emblematic of the Algarve region. Local restaurants and food stalls will showcase it in a range of dishes, from savoury to sweet. Festivalgoers can also enjoy cooking demonstrations by chefs, who will share recipes and techniques.
A highlight of the event is a dessert competition where bakers will compete to create the best sweet potato dessert, judged by a panel of experts. Additionally, a craft fair will showcase handmade items like ceramics, jewellery and clothing, while live music and children’s activities add to the festive atmosphere.
Admission is free of charge.
