Everyone loves an Algarve beach, but there are often questions about whether you’re allowed to take your dog along with you. In fact, the Algarve offers fantastic opportunities for dog owners to enjoy the beach life with their beloved companions.
While the bathing season (June 1st to September 30th, usually between 9am and 7pm) brings some restrictions, several spots welcome four-legged friends. During the rest of the year, there are always options for a seaside stroll. Here are some top dog-friendly beaches in the Algarve:
- Praia da Angrinha (Ferragudo): Situated north of Praia Grande, this beach sits on the Arade Estuary and is the perfect option for early morning or late evening walks in summer.
- Praia do Alvor (Alvor): While the main stretch of Alvor beach has summer restrictions like many other popular beaches, specific areas, particularly towards the estuary, are more amenable to dog walks during the off-season or quieter times of day.
- Praia dos Pescadores (Armação de Pêra): Although it can get busy, locals frequent this beach with their dogs during quieter times.
- Praia da Salema (Budens): This charming fishing village beach is dog-friendly outside of July and August.
Although these beaches are dog friendly, consider whether you need to take your dog to the beach during the summer months. If you do, aim for early morning or late evening walks and avoid the hottest hours, ensuring your dog is always hydrated.
While there are fewer restrictions outside of the peak season, always be mindful of other beach-goers and clean up after your pet. If your dog is listed as a potentially dangerous breed, you’re required to use a leash and muzzle. Local port authorities impose rules, so always check signage.
Two legs or four, the Algarve is the perfect place to call home. Whether you’re planning a holiday with your pet or dreaming of a permanent move, finding the right property cannot be easier.
