The Algarve is embracing a major initiative to future-proof its status as a premier European destination. The SmartVITATUR project, promoted by the University of the Algarve, has launched an effort to support the transition of all 16 Algarve municipalities into Smart Tourist Destinations (DTI).
The central aim of SmartVITATUR is to adapt the successful Spanish Smart Tourist Destination model to the reality of the Algarve. The project seeks to promote a tourism sector that is more sustainable, innovative and explicitly oriented toward the well-being and quality of life of local residents.
The municipalities benefitting from this initiative, which aims to strengthen the vital link between tourism, territory and social intelligence, will receive an integrated diagnosis on quality of life and smart tourism maturity, a personalised action plan for transformation, and strategic recommendations to guide public policies.
The project will also establish the SmartVITATUR Network, a platform for continuous collaboration and the sharing of best practices with leading Spanish destinations. The initiative, co-financed by the ALGARVE 2030 Programme and FCT, demonstrates a collective commitment to creating a region that is more intelligent, inclusive and sustainable.
By prioritising the quality of life and ensuring sustainable growth, the region is making a conscious effort to secure its long-term appeal. This commitment to smarter, more resident-friendly tourism has direct implications for those looking to live and invest in the Algarve.
