What’s on the horizon?

Portimão river front and old fish market

We have chosen three events, taking place in the Algarve, to showcase this week that encompass all age groups.

April has a run/walk (for adults and children) to celebrate 50 years since the peaceful revolution (known as the Carnation revolution). There will be special market to celebrate Portimão’s centenary in July and Sir Tom Jones will be in concert this August, you’ll need to snap your ticket up fast for this one.

Corrida de Liberdade

Open to all of different ages and skill levels, Portimão’s Corrida de Liberdade (Freedom Race) is once again taking place on April 25.

Featuring a 10kms run, a 5k walk plus a children’s race with different routes for children aged 5 years to 15 years.

All races start at Portimão’s riverfront (Avenida Capitão Fernandes Leão Pacheco), with race packs to be picked up on April 23 and 24 (not on race day).

Entrance fees are €3 for the children’s race, €10 for the 5kms walk and €12 for the 10kms run. All participants who cross the finish line will receive a medal. Click here for more information.

Lota Cool Market

Still in Portimão, Lota Cool Market will be held this year between July 24 and 28.

Celebrating Portimão’s centenary, the 2024 market’s theme is eCOOLegacy – where visitors can learn more about the city’s aim to have more “inclusive and sustainability values”.

From the gardens known as Jardim Visconde Bivar, to the square in front of the old fish market building (Lota), from 6pm to 1am, street food will be available with stalls also selling handicrafts and delicacies from regional producers.

Stall holders are able to exhibit and sell at the market free of charge on the condition that they hold a workshop. This means that there are a varied ages and crafts on show making the market a wonderful mix of food, beverages, crafts and talent.

As is the norm, concerts will be held at the end of each evening. For more information click here and here.

Sir Tom Jones

Pine Cliffs in Albufeira will host Tom Jones on August 2 this year at its annual Summer Gala.

Often spoken of as a living legend, Tom Jones, at 83 years of age, still enthrals audiences and will follow in the footsteps of Gloria Gaynor, Brian Ferry, Lionel Ritchie and Joe Cocker.

The early bird tickets are all sold out but there are still a few tickets available so click here to buy yours.
