Lagos Municipality will be exhibiting a 100kg Dom Rodrigo at its 32nd Sweet Art Contest taking place over July 24, 25 and 26. The presentation of this sweet to beat all sweets is scheduled for July 26 at 6pm.
Dom Rodrigo is a Portuguese dessert traditionally associated with the Algarve. It is a combination of egg yolks, sugar, ground almonds, cinnamon, and fios de ovos – a traditional confectionary product consisting of thin egg threads.
Wrapped in colorful foil and shaped into a small pyramid, it is said that these conventual desserts have been prepared since the 18thcentury.
The production phase of the world record-breaking Dom Rodrigo involves eight local sweet makers producing the giant confectionary in three days, using a traditional recipe. A representative from Guinness World Records will evaluate the entire process.
The 32nd edition of the Sweet Art Contest will take place in Lagos’ Sports Complex and promises many new features including Baixo Alentejo as its guest region. There is to be over 70 stalls offering sweets and desserts, local handicrafts plus entertainment for children and adults, together with music being provided by local artists.
