Trade the chill for 20°C sunshine and quiet coastal adventures in Southern Portugal.
November is no longer low season; it’s the Algarve’s secret season where mild temperatures, fewer crowds and vibrant natural landscapes create the perfect atmosphere for outdoor enthusiasts to explore exploring.
Hiking
For dramatic sea views and quiet exploration, hike the Seven Hanging Valleys in Carvoeiro. This stunning coastal path offers views of dramatic cliffs and secluded coves. For a wilder experience, parts of the Fishermen’s Trail in the Costa Vicentina follow untamed coastline. Meanwhile, the forest area of Monchique offers dozens of beautiful trails for all levels, including the relatively recent walking route of Alferce with a suspension bridge over the valley.
Birdwatching
The Algarve’s ‘rias’, such as Alvor, Salgados near Albufeira and the Ria Formosa in the Eastern Algarve, are coastal wetlands that are an absolute dream for birdwatchers. Further east still, ‘The Charms of Alcoutim’ riverside walk provides gentle views along the Guadiana River, perfect for spotting migratory birds.
Cycling and mountain-biking
The off-season climate in the Algarve is ideal for cycling. You’ll find the flattest terrains in the Eastern Algarve – especially Monte Gordo and Vila Real de Santo António –, but for mountain-bikers, scenic routes along the Costa Vicentina and Algarve offer fast descents and striking landscapes, particularly the trails between Aljezur, Carrapateira and Sagres. These routes cater to all skill levels, mixing coastal cliffs with forest paths.
Surfing
November is peak surf season. While famous spots like Nazaré and Peniche get the largest swells, the Algarve offers reliable, quieter waves and diverse surf spots, coupled with mild weather that is far warmer than most European locations. You’ll find the best swells from Albufeira to Sagres, and several surf schools if you’re looking to try out the sport.
Those who already spend time in the Algarve in the autumn months will know just how beautiful the region is, offering a year-round quality of life that continues to draw short- and long-term visitors.
