The Algarve has definitively confirmed its status as Portugal’s main tourist destination, attracting hundreds of thousands of guests and millions of overnight stays in September alone.
According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE), the region welcomed 597,700 guests and 2.38 million overnight stays that month, securing a strong 27.9% share of all national overnight stays.
The region recorded the second-highest average length of stay in Portugal, just behind Madeira, standing at 3.98 nights, and the second-highest Average Daily Rate after Greater Lisbon, which climbed to €151.90 (a 5.9% year-on-year increase). Room occupancy rate held steady at 72.8%.
Although the latest data shows a minor year-on-year drop in international visitors (-1.7%), the region’s resilience shone through, largely sustained by continued growth in domestic tourism.
Economically, according to the latest figures, total revenue from tourist accommodation in September reached €232.3 million, reflecting a 4.4% increase compared to the previous year.
The numbers aren’t surprising. After all, the Algarve’s unique blend of golden beaches, world-class resorts, acclaimed gastronomy and authentic, year-round charm makes it an irresistible place to spend some days, months, even years.
The Algarve continues to reinforce its reputation as one of Europe’s most desirable destinations. With strong infrastructure, steady investment and an enduring appeal that draws both new and returning visitors, the Algarve’s tourism landscape remains vibrant and full of opportunity.
