Every autumn, the dramatic cliffs of Sagres, at the southwestern tip of the Algarve, become a meeting point for thousands of migrating birds – and for the people who travel from across the world to see them.
From October 2-5 2026, the municipality of Vila do Bispo will host the 17th Sagres Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival, widely regarded as the biggest nature event in Portugal.
Each year, the festival draws ornithologists, naturalists, families and curious first-timers to experience this spectacle up close.
Why Sagres?
Sagres juts out at the extreme southwestern corner of continental Europe, creating a natural funnel point and with offshore waters acting as a busy transit corridor for seabirds, moving between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, migrating birds can find food and a safe haven.
Soaring birds (like eagles and vultures) try to avoid long flights over open water because they rely on land-based thermal air currents to fly and the autumn winds (especially from the west or southwest) can stall small songbirds against the coastline, temporarily concentrating high numbers of diverse species in the area.
With the local brush, valleys and pine woods providing a vital feeding and resting place Sagres is the ideal location for bird watching during migrations.

The 2026 festival promises an extensive line-up of activities for all ages and interests, including:
- Guided field trips and hikes through the region’s protected landscapes
- Boat tours along the coast, with opportunities for dolphin-watching
- Bird ringing sessions led by specialists
- Workshops, talks and environmental education activities
- Photography courses to help visitors capture the migration

Organised with leading conservation partners
The festival is organised by the Vila do Bispo council, in partnership with SPEA (Portuguese Society for the Study of Birds) and Almargem (a non-profit association to safeguard historical, cultural and natural values of the Algarve), with support from the Portuguese tourist office along with a range of local sponsors, reflecting the strong collaboration between local government, conservation bodies and the tourism sector.
