What if the most memorable moment of your next Algarve holiday was not the beach at all, but a glass of cool, white wine sipped beneath a two thousand year old olive tree? The Algarve has always been loved for its golden cliffs and warm Atlantic light, yet right now a quieter story is unfolding in the hills just inland. Algarve wine is enjoying a genuine renaissance and it might be the tastiest reason to visit this year.
A region rediscovering its vines
For decades, wine here was a modest affair, made by small, family-run farms tucked between cork oaks and fig trees working together on a co-operative basis. That has now changed. The region now counts roughly 1,400 hectares of vineyards across four DOC areas, including Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira, with more than fifty wineries pouring everything from fresh whites to deep, sun warmed reds.
Where to taste
Some of the most exciting estates sit around Estômbar and Lagoa, an easy drive if you base yourself in Praia do Carvoeiro. Morgado do Quintão, founded in 1810, is the Algarve’s largest certified organic vineyard, famous for its long table lunch beneath that ancient olive tree. Nearby, Quinta dos Vales pairs serious winemaking with an open air sculpture garden, while riverside ARVAD can even be reached by boat from Portimão. Heading west, the vineyards around Lagos offer intimate tastings led by the winemakers themselves.
The grape that tells a story
If one variety captures the soul of the region, it is Negra Mole, an indigenous grape so old it was here before the Moors arrived. Nearly lost last century, it is being lovingly revived by a new generation of growers. Ask for it at any tasting, because you simply cannot find it anywhere else in the world.
Make a day, or a week, of it
Wine country pairs beautifully with the rest of an Algarve break. Build a tasting into a morning of family friendly walks near Carvoeiro, then round things off with a steaming cataplana or a hearty francesinha. Visiting outside high summer? The wineries are at their most relaxed during the Algarve’s quieter season, when the harvest light turns golden and the tasting rooms feel like your own.
