And the winner is…

For the eighth time, Algarve has won Europe’s Leading Beach Destination awarded by The World Travel Awards.

The aim of these awards is to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries.

Voted by qualified professionals working within the travel and tourism themselves and also by holidaymakers and visitors, the awards are usually presented at gala celebrations. However, this year the “event” was held virtually on October 22. 

Although less than last year, click here for details, Portugal received over 20 awards ranging from Leading Adventure Tourism Attraction (Arouca’s walkways – Passadiços de Paiva) to Leading Cruise Port in Europe (Lisbon).

Portugal is certainly steaming ahead in the award-winning stakes, having already earned the number one spot in the 2021 Readers’ Choice Awards, held by Condé Naste Traveller. Learn more here

Benagil’s cave and Odeiceixe beach on the Algarve’s west coast taking prime spots.

Algarve’s beaches have done well this year, also receiving awards from Portuguese entities.

93 beaches received Qualidade de Ouro (Gold Quality) by Quercus, one of Portugal’s most established environmental NGOs. Click here to find out which beaches made the grade.

Criteria for winning the gold award includes the status (excellent) of the water quality over the previous five seasons ie 2016 to 202 inclusive.
