As summer unfolds in the Algarve, a trio of events promises to entertain. Lagoa welcomes the return of Astronomy in Summer, Portimão will celebrate its maritime heritage with the 28th annual Sardine Festival and the “Vinhos do Tejo na Praia” initiative brings a taste of Almeirim’s finest wines to the region’s beaches.
Astronomy in summer returns to Lagoa
Lagoa is set to sparkle once more under the stars with the return of Astronomy in Summer on July 25. This popular event invites astronomy enthusiasts and curious stargazers alike to the Senhora da Rocha promontory for an evening of celestial exploration from 9pm to 11.30pm.
Participants will have the opportunity to observe stars and constellations both with the naked eye and through telescopes provided on-site. Guided by experts from Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, attendees will embark on a journey to spot hidden objects in the sky and decipher constellations.
According to event organisers, early arrival is key for a chance to catch a glimpse of the elusive “evening star,” a celestial treat reserved for the first to arrive.
For a deeper immersion into the cosmos, a television monitor will display images related to astronomy throughout the evening. Accompanying these visuals will be insightful commentary provided by Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve staff.
This event, organised by the municipality of Lagoa in collaboration with Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, is free of charge. Registration can be completed here.
Sardine Festival begins in Portimão
The coastal city of Portimão is gearing up to celebrate its rich maritime heritage with the start of the 28th annual Sardine Festival on July 30. The festivities kick off with a traditional reenactment at the Portimão Museum, capturing the essence of a bygone era.
Locals and tourists alike are invited to witness the vivid reenactment of fishermen unloading freshly caught sardines at the Gil Eanes pier. This reenactment will recreate the bustling atmosphere of the old fish auction, a cultural spectacle that highlights Portimão’s fishing past.
Seventy members of local associations, dressed in period costumes and guided by actor Vítor Correia, have prepared for this event to make sure visitors will enjoy an authentic portrayal of historical fishing practices.
The day begins with the arrival of trawlers laden with sardines, expected to dock between 10.30am and 12.00pm. The fish, totalling five hundred kilogrammes, will be ceremoniously unloaded and “sold” in the vibrant ambiance of the old fish market.
A summer wine affair
This summer, the Vinhos do Tejo na Praia (Tejo Wines on the Beach) initiative returns to Portuguese beaches, bringing the flavours of Almeirim, to sun-seekers between July 26 and August 13.
Holidaymakers will be able to indulge in a selection of fresh and fruity wines ideal for the season. Nine wines, including six whites and three rosés, will be showcased from four producers in Almeirim.
In addition to tastings, the initiative features family-friendly activities. Younger visitors can enjoy non-alcoholic treats and participate in fun-filled games to win beach-themed prizes.
Organised by the Tagus Regional Wine Commission and Almeirim City Hall, Vinhos do Tejo na Praia aims to highlight the distinct character of wines from the region whilst fostering a festive beach atmosphere.
Algarve beaches that are receiving the tastings include Lagos (August 3-4), Praia da Rocha (August 10-11), and Olhão (August 12-13.
