Portugal Triumphs at the 2024 World Travel Awards


Portugal shone at the 31st World Travel Awards, hosted in Funchal, earning 19 accolades – seven more than in 2023. These awards further solidify the country’s reputation as a global tourism leader.

Golfers’ Paradise & Beach Bliss

Among the highlights, Portugal retained its crown as the “Best Golf Destination in the World,” a testament to its world-class courses and breathtaking landscapes, whilst the Algarve was crowned “World’s Best Beach Destination” for the third time after wins in 2020 and 2021.

Urban Charm Meets Heritage Excellence

Lisbon sparkled with dual honours, named the “Best Destination for Urban Breaks” and “Best City of Heritage” for its unique blend of historic grandeur and vibrant city life. Not to be outdone, Porto claimed the title of “Best Metropolitan Seaside Destination” and Braga (located in the north of Portugal) was named the “Emerging Destination” for the second year in a row

Islands of Adventure and Luxury

Madeira celebrated its 10th consecutive win as “Best Island Destination.” The Azores continued to impress, earning the “Best Adventure Tourism Destination” award.

Innovative Attractions and Conservation

Other notable wins included Passadiços do Paiva, recognised as the “Best Attraction for Adventure Tourism,” and Dark Sky Alqueva, which was named the “Best Responsible Tourism Project.” Parques de Sintra – Monte da Lua was honoured as the World’s Leading Conservation Company”.

Sky-High Excellence & Boutique Hospitality

TAP Air Portugal reaffirmed its excellence, maintaining its titles as the top airline for connections to Africa and South America.

In hospitality, Portugal’s creativity shined:

  • Amazing Evolution was celebrated as the “Best Boutique Hotel Management Company”.
  • Olissipo Lapa Palace earned its place as the “Best Classic Hotel”.
  • Dunas Douradas Beach Club was honoured as the “Best Golf Resort and Villas”.
  • Bairro Alto Hotel in Lisbon was named the “Best Historical Reference Hotel”.
  • The Savoy Palace, which hosted the gala in Funchal, was voted “Best Luxury Hotel,” while its sister properties The Reserve and Saccharum earned awards for “Best Luxury Boutique Hotel” and “Best Retreat,” respectively.
