The Algarve is set to come alive this summer with a series of vibrant cultural events that promise to enchant locals and visitors alike.
Through July, diverse events range from a candlelit market and an open-air theatre performance to photo exhibitions and centenary celebrations. Join us as we explore our chosen highlights of July’s events, each offering a glimpse into the heart and soul of the region.
Under the stars at Play in the Parque
Play in the Parque, known for its annual outdoor theatre productions, invites the audience to delve into the legend of Robin Hood with a modern-day twist.
Set against the backdrop of the forest behind Barão de São João on July 5, Robin in the Hood is a twist on the timeless tale and promises to entertain all.
The performance will take place at Parque de Merendas, the audience should arrive from 4.30pm with the play starting at 6.30pm. There will be drinks and snacks available and it is suggested that blankets or low chairs are brought for comfort.
A world aglow in Lagoa
The theme of Lagoa’s Mercado de Culturas à Luz das Velas this year is traditions and sounds of the Iberian Peninsula.
Against a backdrop of flickering candlelight (candles are lit at 8.30pm), artisans and vendors will showcase their crafts and Iberian culinary delights.
The air will be busy with the sound of live music and scents of spices all creating a sensory tapestry that evokes a bygone era.
Taking place in the streets of Lagoa and in the Convento de São José, visitors will enjoy artists from Portugal and Spain for four days starting on July 4 to 7.
With street entertainment, dancing and singing the town centre will be humming for sure.
Silves Sunset Secrets
As the sun dips below the horizon, Silves will offer live entertainment, regional cuisine and local wines. From its ancient Moorish castle visitors can also enjoy dance performances and a fire show.
With a 600 capacity, the event takes place from 6.30pm to 11pm with tickets costing €5, children under 12 are free. Tickets can be bought from FNAC, Worten and the CTT (post office).
Starting on July 4 and continuing every Thursday, August 1 will be the last event.
Enjoy an evening watching hues of orange and pink, whilst enjoying regional cuisine, wines and entertainment.
Preserving heritage through the lens in Lagos
In Lagos, a photo exhibition pays homage to the seafaring traditions that have shaped the town’s identity.
Photographer Paul Gerace captures the beauty of the region’s traditional brightly-painted fishing boats.
Taking place at Mercearia Bio Café until July 27, the exhibition is open to view from Monday to Saturday.
Celebrating Portimão’s centenary
Portimão is marking its centenary this year and on July 26 and 27 the town will celebrate with Noitada Portimão.
The festival will have three stages: the main one at Praça da República, Largo da Mó hosting Fado ao Luar and the third one on the riverfront.
Streets will come alive with light displays transforming building façades, interactive displays, music and the opportunity to enjoy local delicacies. Children have not been forgotten with a fun playground including inflatables to play on.
From lively street performances to thought-provoking exhibitions, the Noitada Festival honours Portimão’s rich heritage while embracing contemporary creativity.
