Discover the Feira de Santa Iria in Faro
When the summer heat softens into golden October days, the Algarve capital throws its biggest party of the year. The Feira de Santa Iria has drawn crowds to Faro for centuries, and it remains one of the region’s most cherished autumn traditions. This year the fair returns from 15 to 25 October 2026. Entry is free, so it makes a wonderful outing for couples and families alike.
The story behind the Feira de Santa Iria
The Feira de Santa Iria is no modern add-on. Its roots reach back to 1596, when the town was granted the privileges of a royal free fair. The event honours Saint Irene, whose feast day falls on 20 October. For more than a hundred years it has filled the Largo de São Francisco, just east of Faro’s walled old town. Today it welcomes close to 200,000 visitors across its eleven days. That makes it one of the largest events on the whole Algarve calendar, and few capture the city’s character quite so well.
What to see, taste and do
The fair truly comes alive after dark. A giant Ferris wheel lights up the sky, while rides and fairground games keep younger visitors happy for hours. Follow your nose to the food stalls next. There you will find farturas, churros and roasted nuts, plus regional sweets worthy of a proper Algarvian treat. Craft stalls and exhibition pavilions showcase local produce and handmade goods. The fair also keeps its farming heritage alive, with regional wares and seasonal treats at every turn. Round off the evening with a glass of Algarve wine and, if you are lucky, a little live fado.
Turn the fair into an Algarve autumn break
October is a glorious time to visit the Algarve. The days stay warm, the sea is still swimmable, and the summer crowds have long gone. From a comfortable holiday let along the coast, Faro is an easy trip for the evening. Whether you are based near Lagos, Carvoeiro or Albufeira, the journey is short and simple. Better still, you can pair the fair with quiet beaches, coastal walks and long, lazy lunches.
Best of all, prices ease once the peak season ends. There are plenty of reasons to visit out of season, and the Feira de Santa Iria is one of the most joyful. Come for the fair, and stay for the calm, golden Algarve autumn.
