airbnb impact in Portugal

Users of the Airbnb platform in Portugal generated more than €2 billion in direct economic impact in Portugal during 2018.

According to data from the company, Portugal was the country with the tenth greatest economic impact on a list of 30 countries which was headed by the United States, followed by France and Spain.

An Airbnb survey of more than 5,500 hosts and travellers found that 60 percent of Portuguese hosts on the platform say that sharing their home has contributed to them being able to afford their property.

While the benefits for hosts are clear, there has also been a positive economic impact on local areas according to the company, with an average of 41 percent of spending from guests using Airbnb in Portugal being spent in the local area of the property.

The platform has also seen guests staying for longer on their trips, extending stays for an average of 5.1 days with 85 percent of guests stating that Airbnb provides a more convenient location for their stay when compared to a hotel and that 69 percent of guests made their decision to use the platform based on wanting to explore a specific location.

The estimated direct economic impact by the platform is the sum of the revenues earned by the hosts and the estimated expenditure of guests.
