Winter in the warmth

For those who are able to work from home or those who no longer work, spending the winter in a warm country is a possibility, even now with COVID-19.

Life in Algarve moves at a slower pace than in northern European/American countries and, with the opportunity to cook, eat and spend a lot of your waking hours outside, it also feels a lot healthier.

Major infrastructure investments in the region means that it can compete with most of its northern European counterparts, especially with the motorway network now allowing easy access to the rest of Portugal and Spain.

Faro International airport is within an hour’s drive of most towns and cities along the coast and Lisbon’s International airport just a two-and-a-half hours’ drive away.

Interestingly, Algarve receives more sunshine throughout the year than California. The winter weather is mild compared to northern-European countries, averaging temperatures during the cooler months of 18ºC (64ºF). Of course, when sitting in the sun the temperature can go up into the 20ºCs (75ºF or there abouts) with the Atlantic winds cooling things off at times. For more information on Algarve weather patterns visit the British Met Office site.

Algarve still has a low rate of COVID-19 cases, click here for a live interactive map giving details of cases in the region. Visitors can feel safe to enjoy short or extended stays and have all the necessary facilities such as fibre-optic internet connection to support work or leasure.

For those visitors concerned about shopping for groceries, supermarkets offer the opportunity to order online and either deliver or customers can drive through to pick up their purchases.

All in all, there is so much going on. With over 40 golf courses to play, see here, October’s annual Birdwatching & Nature Activities Festival is being hosted in Sagres, Formula 1 is at Portimão’s Autodrómo Internacional do Algarve at the end of October followed by the European Le Mans Series and the Algarve Classic Festival which is the biggest classic car event in the Iberian Peninsula.

Finally, to offer ease of mind, travel insurance is available that includes unlimited access to a tourist assistance service where medical advice can be obtained together with services such as online consultations, information on local hospitals, clinic and doctors and the urgent shipping of medicine. Coverage of any event that is linked to COVID-19 is also included.
